This was painted one morning during the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Festival 2019 in the Columbia Hills of Washington State. The area is located about a mile east of The Dalles Bridge along State Highway 14. The air was hot and dry and the breezes were light. This is a land of sagebrush and rolling hillsides, which have revealed many basalt towers and cliffs over the years. These rocks generate a great deal of warmth which started to warm me excessively as I painted. I understand why small animals take solace there during colder temperatures.
